Vintage Credenza

vintage credenza is the solo project of Meanjin/Brisbane artist John Russell, a musician, curator, and founder of the independent label 4000 Records. Begun in 2007, the project went quiet after the 2011 floods before being revived in 2023 and slowly tended to in the years since. Russell’s work under the vintage credenza name centres on abstract, ambient, and drone‑based composition, often built from minimal sound sources shaped into immersive, slow‑moving environments.

The ongoing Drone Prompts series exemplifies his collaborative approach: Russell creates a simple drone or soundscape and shares it with a fellow Meanjin artist, who then transforms the prompt into a new piece entirely their own. The results range from layered expansions to radical reworkings, reflecting the breadth of Brisbane’s experimental community.

Alongside his own music, Russell runs 4000 Records, a label that documents and supports a growing family of Brisbane artists working across ambient, experimental, folk‑adjacent, and textural sound practices. His dual role as artist and label‑runner places him at the centre of a quietly influential local ecosystem — one defined by patience, collaboration, and a commitment to physical formats.
