Bio
Metttani is the solo electronic music project of French-Tunisian musician, producer and live performer Amine Metani.
The project combines electronic production, live synthesis and acoustic sounds with influences ranging from 1990s big beat and death metal to 2000s breakcore, IDM, industrial and bass-oriented electronic music. It is also strongly informed by non-tempered traditional music, North African adorcist ritual practices and Amazonian animist spiritualities.
Improvisation and live performance are central to Metttani's working process. Tracks often originate from improvised electronic performances and are progressively refined through repeated live playing, blurring the boundaries between composition, production and performance.
A recurring influence is Tunisian Stambeli music. Metani's field recordings of Stambeli ceremonies in the early 2010s contributed to the creation of the Shouka label, which he co-founded and later served as artistic director. His work draws parallels between ritual trance, possession and collective experience on one hand, and electronic music and club culture on the other. This relationship became particularly explicit on Tawātem, originally developed from music composed for a documentary on Stambeli (The Spirits' Last Dance, released in 2023).
Metani is also the founder of the multidisciplinary platform and collective Arabstazy. His releases and performances frequently explore hybrid forms between inherited musical traditions, experimental electronics and contemporary club music.
The project initially used the spelling Mettani. The spelling Metttani was subsequently adopted for later releases and performances.
