Christophe Charles

Christophe Charles (b. 20 January 1964, Marseille) is a French-Japanese experimental musician, audio-visual artist, field recordist, and media arts academic researcher. He is the son of philosopher and musicologist Daniel Charles (1935—2008). Since 2011, Charles has served as the Professor of the Department of Imaging Arts & Sciences at Musashino Art University in Kodaira, Western Tokyo.

Charles briefly studied in Germany, as a visiting student at Hochschule Für Bildende Künste Hamburg between 1985 and 1987, and later earned two PhD degrees: Art & Design (1996) from the University of Tsukuba and Japanese Studies (1997) from INALCO (National Institute for Oriental Languages and Civilizations) in Paris. He released multiple CD albums, notably the Undirected "triptych" (1997–2003) on Mille Plateaux / Ritornell and Sub Rosa, and collaborated with prominent European and Japanese musicians, such as Henning Christiansen, Mieko Shiomi, Shuichi Chino, Markus Popp, Yoshihiro Hanno, Yuzo Kako, Keiichiro Shibuya, Kozo Inada, France Jobin/I8U, and Cal Lyall. Christophe Charles participated in many acclaimed group exhibitions, including Sound Art (2000) at label 314245, and V&A's [r=16739673] (2001) in London.
