J Antoni

Swedish musician and ex graffitti writer, Johan Antoni, born and raised in Stockholm, started making music in 1994.

He is inspired by old school electro/funk and hip hop as well as sleazy Chicago house and harmonic Detroit techno, the first tracks were crafted with a 303, 808 and akai sampler. The early tracks were a potpourri of all the musical influences and didn't really get anywhere, but a distinct style began to evolve and in 1996 he started the collective and label Urban Electro Squad. UES (short for Urban Electro Squad) were one of the few (nearly the only) live acts on the then flowering Stockholm club scene. UES has had a variety of members since then (the only consistent one apart from J Antoni being Ruba, a close friend since the graffitti days), and a variety of releases on different labels in different styles ranging from beats to deep techno to jazzy house, experimental stuff on his own UES label and a lot of remixes for other labels, all more or less produced by J Antoni. In 1998, he teamed up with S Krooks and formed Betamax Crew, with this project focusing on more club oriented tracks. Ever since, he's released tracks under the various monikers, and also under his own name.
