The North Face is a US outdoor recreation gear & clothing manufacturer, established in 1968 by Douglas "Doug" R. Tompkins (1943—2015) and Susie Tompkins Buell (b. 1943), and originally headquartered in San Francisco, California. Initially focused on professional equipment for mountaneering and rock climbing, the North Face eventually expanded towards "streetwear" couture. In 2000, the company was acquired by VF Corporation. The brand's logo is inspired by Half Dome, a distinct rock formation in Yosemite National Park.
